Where do we find the courage to create?

Creativity has always been a controversial topic in society. Some say it is gifted. Others say it is a result of resentful past events/traumas. We will not get into this debate with a shallow perspective. To create is something that takes your attention more than just five minutes. Rather, we will take a look at what triggers our creativity.

Kerem also mentions good tips how to find out the creativity. Check his latest blog post.

There is a common myth that most celebrities and artists come from a dark past. Unpleasant experiences, irreparable traumas and unwanted conversations are part of their history. It is partially true but not limited to these factors. Truly, creativity requires some confrontations yet, this limitation can exist in different forms from a deadline to an abusive parent.

Myths and Symbols

“After a satisfying lunch and a day beer is not the best time when you want to read a poem let alone write one. That’s why, we need to choose times when it is more intense, and we are fully conscious. If you write a poem after a noon nap, they will read your poem at that time.”

This issue is not about what kind of poem you would like to read. This is more like the nature of myths and symbols that rise with the creative act. Myths and symbols are regressive countenances of archaic concerns, unconscious longings and similar spiritual meanings. These new meanings can create new concepts. Besides, they can unleash new realities that have not happened before. This is a more progressive countenance. Eminent French philosopher explains this phenomenon as a progressive way of our relationship with nature and our existence. In the long run, this is a universal path rather than an abstract one.

This is where we get rid of the shallow Freudian psychoanalysis perspective that ignores the progressive nature of myths and symbols. Subjective experience and objective reality create a dichotomy. This high level of consciousness reaches beyond this dichotomy and expounds on new meanings to symbols. It is historically called a rapture.

Never Underestimate Courage

Courage is the ability to progress despite more hopelessness. This is a really interesting way to define something oxymoron. This is like pouring hot water into an ice bath. You have to know creativity is a long and thorny path. You may never find success at the end, yet you shall never quit.

Last but not least we will quote Marge Simpson from the Simpsons ” I am afraid of what I don’t know.” We all are indeed. Every new experience makes us face ourselves. It means we cross our border at that time and look ourselves what’s beyond that “us”. This requires courage. If we are not talking about something new, then we cannot talk about courage anyway.

This confrontation mostly may seem ugly, frequently may feel wrong and absolutely may get us injured. However, it is just as real as our existence. We are all creators in our world. What an abused artist does for her/his realization is not so different from the time when a single mother creates an opportunity for her children.

The reality is our source code to trigger our imaginary side. This chain reaction may not happen constantly and objectively just like in a science lab. However, it is a good way to start when we intend to discover ourselves and connect the dots.

Final Tip:

If you don’t listen to your existence and don’t express your own thoughts, you betray yourselves. Because you don’t contribute to the whole, it also means you betray the society.
